Sweet du Jour: Orejas de Carnaval

February 15, 2015
Orejas de Carnaval

There are a few typical Carnival recipes in Spain but this is my favorite: orejas de Carnaval literally Carnival ears. This delicious, crunchy dessert is typical of the north of Spain. Its main ingredients are eggs, flour, oil and lots of white sugar. The anise-flavored dough is rolled out very thin, then fried and dusted with powdered sugar.

I've searched and searched for the story behind the name -I asssume it has something to do with the shape- and where it comes from but unfortunately I haven't found anything. I apologize. So this post is meant to show you a bit more about Spanish culture. I must admit that I've never made them myself but if you want to give it a try, here is a recipe in English and Spanish.

What are the typical Carnival desserts in your country? Let me know in the comments below.
Happy Carnival!

  1. Hmm I'm not sure what New Yorkers do for Carnaval but when I went to college in the mountains of Pennsylvania they had fastnachts which are dutch potato donuts. They are really tasty. Your Orejas look delicious!
