Happy Birthday Blog! (+ blogging tips)

April 2, 2015

One year ago I decided I needed a creative outlet and so I created this blog. Since then I've been putting a huge amount of passion and effort to it. Every week I work really hard to create original and quality content while at the same time I share with you my passions, my hopes and fears. I'm a perfectionist so I'm always looking for ways to improve my blog.
In this first year I've learnt many things about blogging. Obviously, I'm still learning because this new industry is constantly evolving and you need to keep up to date. So to celebrate its first "blogiversary" I'm sharing a few tips that you may find useful. Some of them I've already put into practice, others are still on my checklist.

Did you know that 95% of blogs don't make it through their first year? Don't give up! It takes years of hard work to make it in this business. Nowadays competition is big and fierce.

Without further ado here are my tips for blogging success:

1. Fake it till you make it. In my opinion this is a very important point. You should look like a professional and successful blogger even if you are not there yet. A way to do that is having customized blog design that no one else has. The first thing that brands and readers see is how your site is presented. If they like that they'll stay, if not they may move on.

2. Have an awesome About Me page. This includes having a professional profile photo. As for the information you share about yourself, that's your choice. I'd advise to be honest and -may sound cliché but it's so true- to be yourself.

3. Include links to other blog posts such as those related to your latest one, your most popular ones or suggestions as you may also like...

4. Permalinks. It's important to keep them short. I used to leave the automatic permalink option on and it sometimes created long URLs. Customize them by using only key words.

5. SEO & Google Analytics. Unfortunately, I'm still a rookie in this topic and I still have a lot to learn here. You can find lots of websites teaching you how to increase your blog traffic thanks to them.

6. Social Networks. I actually want to devote a whole post to my tricks for social media so I'm not going to share a lot now. Basically, you should use your Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, etc. to let the world know that your latest post is live. Share the link to your blog, use hashtags and tag brands to reach as many people as possible. Don't forget about tagging bigger bloggers. Their shoutouts and retweets can make a huge difference on your statistics.

7. Plan posts ahead. A blogging planner is very useful to keep everything as organized as possible. I you ever suffer from writers block, google "blog post ideas" there are lots of articles telling you what people are looking forward to reading online.

8. Create a photography inspiration board on Pinterest. You can check mine out here. Even the most successful bloggers need inspiration. If you are starting out, it's a great idea to recreate some of your favorite photos adding your own personal touch. It's also a great idea to acquire photography skills. I spend hours trying to figure out how a photo has been taken. It feels so good when you crack the code!

9. Be Photoshop savvy. I took a Photoshop course a while ago and it was great to learn the basics but the most useful thing is a YouTube tutorial. The biggest problem with Photoshop is that you can't learn to use it by yourself unlike most computer software. Someone has to teach you. So every time I need to retouch something in particular I turn to YouTube and I can assure you I've learnt a ton!

10. Create quality, interesting and tasteful content. This may sound obvious but not everybody does it.

I hope you find this helpful. If you have any questions or you want to add anything else, leave me a comment below.

  3. Happy Birthday to your blog (mine just turned a year old too). I definitely didn't realize how much work it was. It's just not enough to write a good post, but 80% of the time is spent promoting. Love your tips, thanks for sharing!
