Today I'd like to introduce you to a very special concept: Paradores de Turismo. It is a unique hotel chain committed to reclaiming the Spanish heritage.

Its origins date back to 1910, when the Spanish government made the decision to create a hotel infrastructure -nonexistent in the country at the time- whose establishments would provide lodgings for visitors and travelers, while also improving Spain’s image abroad. The hotels are often in castles, palaces, fortresses, convents, monasteries and other historic buildings.

Parador San Marcos Leon España Spain

This is Parador de San Marcos which happens to be in my hometown, Leon. It is one of the most extraordinary historic hotels in the Old Continent. Construction of the building began in the 16th century. It was built to house the peninsula's western headquarters for the Military Order of Saint James. The project was financed by King Ferdinand the Catholic. The magnificent five-star hotel is a museum of stately function rooms and includes a spectacular cloister.

The chain has hotels located all over Spain. Let me show you a few more.

Parador de Plasencia

The town of Plasencia is located on the banks of the Jerte River, in Caceres, Extremadura. Its Parador is in the old quarter, a strategic location along the ancient commercial and pilgrimage route known as Ruta de la Plata. The hotel is in Santo Domingo Monastery, built in the 15th century. Thick stone walls, vaulted ceilings and a Gothic style interior will transport you back in time. The hotel is the ideal spot from which to explore the city and the surrounding natural landscapes.

Parador de Trujillo

In the historic city of Trujillo, birthplace of discoverers, you will find this lovely Parador, occupying the former convent of Santa Clara and preserving the peaceful and calm atmosphere of the convent. Inside there are two magnificent cloisters. This is an ideal hotel for relaxing and leisure. The rooms are peaceful and the Parador offers beautiful, elegant function rooms, along with a seasonal swimming pool.

Parador de Guadalupe

With its lovely interior courtyard filled with lemon and orange trees, secluded swimming pool, function room with fireplace, and views of the mountains and monastery, Parador de Guadalupe will let your imagination soar, carrying you back to distant times and immersing you in the magic of a medieval village. The hotel has an incredible location on the site of the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe, which has been declared a World Heritage Site. The monastery complex is made up of four parts: church, auditorium building, Mudejar cloister and Gothic cloister. Needless to say, all of them are spectacular.

Monasterio de Corias

This Parador is located in Cangas del Narcea, Asturias. It's a spectacular monastery that has been declared a National Historical-Artistic Monument. The basement houses a museum where you can view the archaeological remains of the original building, which dates to the early 11th century. The view of the mountain landscape and Narcea River from the windows of the guest rooms is spectacular. The Tuscan-style church with its ample spaces and large baroque altarpiece is also worth a visit. This Parador is surrounded by magical forests and rural landscapes which display different colors for each season of the year.
