Thanksgiving Tablescape

Thanksgiving Tablescape

November 21, 2016

If you are from the US I bet you are busy brainstorming for last minute Thanksgiving ideas. How are you going to surprise your guests next Thursday? Since my birthday is pretty close to Thanksgiving -actually, some years it's on the same day- I like to decorate the table in a similar way as for that holiday. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving in Spain so it's also a way for me to remember my time in America. You may have already seen a sneak peek of this tablescape on my Instagram.

Let's start with the basics:
  • An embroidered table runner. Last Monday I told you about how important objects with sentimental value are for me. This table runner is one of them because I bought it last summer in Santorini. When I travel I don't like to buy the typical souvenirs, I always look for something unique and original.
  • Wicker placemats and your best crockery, cutlery and glassware.
  • Candles and flowers are a must. No table is ready until you place those two. The beautiful white vase was a great find brought back from a trip to Cambridge.
There's so much more you can add from napkin rings to centerpieces. There are some suggestions at the end of this post.

Now, if you are actually decorating for Thanksgiving let me give you an extra idea. Make little paper cards with the name of your guests to put on each plate. Write a Thanksgiving joke inside to get them in a festive mood! Here are a few ones:
How many cooks does it take to stuff a turkey? One, but you really have to squeeze him in!
If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring? Pilgrims!
What would you get if you crossed a turkey with an evil spirit? A poultrygeist!
Who is not hungry at Thanksgiving? The turkey, he’s already been stuffed!
What are unhappy cranberries called? Blueberries!
If the Pilgrims were alive today, what would they be most famous for? Their age!

Below you have a round-up of my favorite decor pieces for Thanksgiving and Christmas, you'll find placemats, table runners, vases, plates and centerpieces among other things. I could get one of each!

Greek Yogurt Fruit Tart

Guys, I may have found the healthiest treat ever! This delicious Greek yogurt fruit tart is perfect for either breakfast or dessert. I'm thinking Thanksgiving specifically. Picture yourself the morning after the feast. You are still feeling stuffed after indulging in roasted turkey and pumpkin pie...but you need to have something for breakfast. These two options will surely make you feel better: the watermelon pizza or this Greek yogurt fruit tart.

No flour, eggs or sugar are needed for this recipe. You don't need to use your oven either. All you need is a tart pan and few ingredients. The crust is made of cashews (you can use almonds or other nuts) and dates. The base is creamy Greek yogurt, I've used a natural one but flavored ones work too. If you don't eat dairy you can use a soy yogurt for instance. Finally, the fruit you use for decoration is up to you.
Without further ado, here's the recipe.

INGREDIENTS
15 dates
1 and 1/2 cups raw unsalted cashews
1 cup Greek yogurt
assorted fruit

DIRECTIONS
1. Cover the pan with parchment paper.
2. Cut dates in half and remove the seed. Grind them together with cashews in a food processor.
3. Pour the mixture on a cake pan and press until a thick dough is formed. Go up a bit on the sides. This will be the base of the tart.
4. Spread yogurt on top of the crust.
5. Decorate with fresh sliced fruit.
Leftovers have to be stored in the fridge.
