Madrid for Foodies: La Petite Cuisine

Madrid for Foodies: La Petite Cuisine

July 8, 2020
La Petite Cuisine

Madrid's food scene is foodie paradise. There's a wide variety of restaurants offering something for everyone, from international cuisines to the best Spanish classics. However, if you decide to flee the concrete jungle to find some peace and quiet, you can still find great spots to eat.

This is the case of La Petite Cuisine in Cercedilla, a town 45 minutes north of Madrid. If I had to define La Petite Cuisine with one word, I'd say it's dreamy. Picture a conservatory surrounded by nature, with French cafe chairs and tables al fresco where you can enjoy a long, peaceful and delicious breakfast or brunch while breathing fresh air and the only noise are birds chirping.

La Petite Cuisine offers many things: baked goods, catering service, events venue and workshop. They make the cakes for one of my favorite cafes in Madrid: Salon des Fleurs and I can't wait to attend one of their baking workshops.

Besides the scrumptious food they serve, my favorite thing about La Petite Cuisine is their business idea and savoir-faire. What they offer is not only a great meal but also an unforgettable experience. And how do they achieve that? They focus on quality rather than quantity by choosing the very best ingredients and keeping the number of customers to a minimum so that they don't compromise the quality of their products. Furthermore, every single corner is beautifully decorated so your time there is a pleasure of all the senses. Last but not least, they take the time to talk to their costumers, to make them feel welcome and comfortable. To sum up, at La Petite Cuisine you feel at home from the moment you get there.

Apart from the outdoor area, there's a lovely dining room in the conservatory that you can book for events to get the complete unforgettable experience I was talking about. The beautiful decor, delicate hors d'oeuvres and floral china kind of reminds you of the Mad Hatter's tea party in Alice in Wonderland, right?

You can get the full brunch menu for 28€ which consists of a refreshing cup of gazpacho or salmorejo, premium coffee or tea, a basket of assorted homemade bread, a savory tasting dish and a sweet treat tray to share. We were full after brunch but it was so good that we couldn't leave without taking home one of their freshly baked pies and cakes.

Would you like to give La Petite Cuisine a try?

The town of Cercedilla

Cercedilla is a town in the Madrid mountains. It's beautiful in winter to see the stone and slate roof houses covered with snow. In summer, the temperature is always lower than in Madrid, so it's a great place to escape the scorching heat. Cercedilla is an incredible place for hiking, adventure activities and taking a dip in the natural swimming-pools.

How to get to Cercedilla

Train: take Cercanias line C-8 from Chamartin or Atocha.
Bus: take line 684 from Moncloa.
Car: take motorway A6 north towards el Escorial.

We are living special circumstances. We are living a situation never known before to any of us. I want to send you my best thoughts and wishes. Hang in there, this too shall pass.

Because of the lockdown we've had to postpone some of our travel plans, but that doesn't mean we are any less excited about traveling, quite the opposite. Meanwhile, let's practice our cooking skills while reliving some past traveling experiences with these recipes to travel the world without living home.

Best Recipes to Travel the World: Greek Style Cheese Toastie

This sandwich is brilliant  because of the amazing mixture of flavors: sweet, savory and sour. It includes a variety of ingredients such as dried apricots filled with Feta cheese, olives, red onion or mint  and comes with a dip made with yogurt, cucumber and lemon. Close your eyes and you will feel as if you were in a Greek island at every bite.

Best Recipes to Travel the World: Teddy Bear Cookies

Feel transported to a New York coffee shop with these sweet and salty teddy bear cookies by the talented Tieghan from Half Baked Harvest. I don't think I've seen such a wide variety of cookies anywhere in the world as they have in the US. I especially love the ones sold at Whole Foods, last summer we bought a different one every day to try them all. When I think of cookies and coffee I instantly think of the US.
Give these adorable Teddy Bear cookies, you won't regret it. Plus, it's a great weekend activity if you have kids or of you love baking!

Best Recipes to Travel the World: Mexican Enchiladas

Another great recipe from Half Baked Harvest is this chicken tortilla enchilada rice bake. I find the vibrant colors all over Latin America very inspiring. They are on their the houses, their clothes and even the food! I love colorful food, it's 100 time more appetizing. This recipe has all the ingredients for a perfect meal: beautiful colors and an amazing mixture of flavors. Close your eyes and picture the mixture of melted cheese, coriander, avocado and lime in your mouth. Don't you feel like you are in Mexico?

Best Recipes to Travel the World: Brunch at Home

Did you know that brunch originated in England? It is believed that this meal started in England in the late 19th century and became popular in the United States in the 1930s. Set the table nicely, and make your very own brunch at home with British tea with these recipe ideas.
My two favorite quiche recipes: spinach, pine nuts and raisins or ham, tomato and mushrooms.

Best Recipes to Travel the World: French Toast

So French toast is not actually French, but you can pretend you are in Paris while making the actual French equivalent: pain perdu, literally "lost bread" because you use stale bread to make it. French toast in Spanish is "torrija" and it's typical during Easter so I'll be making this recipe in the next few weeks. Voilà!

Madrid for Foodies: Best Brunch and Breakfast Spots

Madrid for Foodies: Best Brunch and Breakfast Spots

May 20, 2019
luxury hotel brunch madrid orfila restaurant breakfast spain
Summer is in the air...Days are longer, temperatures are raising...It's the last few weeks of spring before summer gets here. At this time we feel the urge to spend as much time as possible outdoors enjoying the great weather and that is often accompanied by great food as well. This is our favorite time of the year to go out for brunch.

You know that Spain is well-known for its impressive gastronomy. Tapas are great but there's so much more to try! Even though brunch is not a Spanish tradition, it has become very popular in big cities in recent years and, right now, one of the best things to do in Madrid this spring and summer is to try one of the many wonderful brunch spots in the capital of Spain.

Brunch menus in Spain are similar in general, they offer natural juices and smoothies, coffee and tea, cereal with granola or muesli and a main dish which can be savory -like quiche, eggs Benedict, avocado toast, breakfast bowls or sandwiches- or sweet -waffles, carrot cake, pancakes... Some places allow you to build your own menu, others offer a set one.

Here is my complete guide to the best brunch and breakfast restaurants in Madrid. It includes all the info you need and a map at the end.

BEST BREAKFAST IN MADRID: CAFE RUN RUN RUN

Open in May 2019, Cafe Run Run Run is one of the latest additions to Madrid's healthy restaurant scene. This lovely cafe was created with runners and healthy lifestyle in mind. All the dishes are 100% clean eating and it has many vegan options. However, this spot is much more than a simple cafe, it's a meeting point for runners and clean eaters. In fact, they are a running club as well. We absolutely loved the place and I'm sure we'll be coming back many many times.

BEST BREAKFAST IN MADRID: ABOLEA

If you are looking for healthy 100% homemade brunch, Abolea restaurant is the place to go. Their homemade granola was delicious but their breakfast bowls are the true star here. Best thing we've ever had! They are just perfect: pretty, delicious and healthy food, can you ask for more? They make their own bread and cakes as well. The set brunch menu is 15,95€, the most affordable we've had so far.

BEST BREAKFAST IN MADRID: BENDITA LOCURA

Sunday brunch is not enough for you? No problem! Bendita Locura offers brunch every day of the week. This is the latest brunch restaurant we've been to and it's already one of our favorites. The experience was perfect: fast and kind service, great food and reasonable price. The offer a full brunch for 21€ and a smaller one for 16€.

Bendita Locura is a place we will go back to, now we want to try their lunch and dinner! It's a small cafe and constantly buzzing so make reservations if you don't want to wait.

BEST BREAKFAST IN MADRID: FRUTAS PROHIBIDAS

This cozy cafe in Malasaña offers a great quality brunch menu for less than 20€. Their healthy menu includes superfooods, yummy smoothies and a wide variety of toasts. I love the way they present food, the açai bowl for instance comes inside a coconut! A spot to come back again and again.

BEST BREAKFAST IN MADRID: EL JARDIN SECRETO DE SALVADOR BACHILLER

A secret garden in the heart of Madrid. Located on the roof top of the Salvador Bachiller store, this hidden gem is one of the trendiest restaurants in Madrid. The decor is impressive, there are plants all around, even the placemat is a giant leaf! It's like you left the concrete jungle to be in the real jungle.

BEST BREAKFAST IN MADRID: FRIDA

This was the first brunch we ever had in Madrid so talking about it brings back a lot of memories. Located in the trendy neighborhood of Chueca, Frida is where all the cool Madrileños hang out. Highly instagrammable and delicious food, I think that sums it up pretty well. Frida is one of the trendiest places in Madrid at the moment so if you like that kind of spot be sure to make reservations before you go.

BEST BREAKFAST IN MADRID: HOTEL ORFILA

This was a brunch to remember. We had brunch at Holet Orfila last summer to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. It's the most luxurious brunch we've had to date and one of our favorites both because of the quality and the fact that we were celebrating such a special occasion. This is one of the most elaborate weekend brunch in Madrid, it doesn't consist of a menu like the previous ones, it's a savory-and-sweet self-service buffet and the price is 59€.
